defunensemble

defunensemble is Finland's premier contemporary music group devoted to the performance of electroacoustic music. Founded in 2009 by composer Sami Klemola, the ensemble includes a pianist, a cellist, a clarinettist, a harpist, a flutist, two sound designers and a visual artist. All members are highly active in Finland's new music scene.

“Pieces involving electronics often causes problems”, says Sami Klemola, and the ensemble is therefore a hardworking, hard practising unit that’s constantly working on improving the art of combining electronics and acoustic instruments. Furthermore defunensemble often collaborate with electronic artists from other music genres such as noise, techno etc. This has made the ensemble a highly respected expert in the electronic music field.

Collaboration with composers is a fundamental principle for the ensemble. The works are often commissioned and developed in workshops held between the players, sound designers, and composers. Also the visual artist take part in this process, as the productions of defunensemble always includes a visual element. The result is concerts – or concert installations – that are intense, surprising and… electric!
